The Three Personalities in the Same Passage Conclusion new Testament Light I was recently in some discussions/debates online about the nature of God and whether the "Trinity" exists, or if God is purely singular and exists in different forms rather than different persons.   This idea that God has different "forms" or "mod...

Coffee With Jesus: Luke 22–23

...ou is the new covenant in my blood.” (Luke 22:20, emphasis mine). Once his blood was shed, the prophecies fulfilled, then the new covenant was sealed and the Kingdom inaugurated. Though, this then throws back to the parable of the ten minas Jesus told the crowds a few days earlier when he was on his way into Jerusalem, in Luke 19:11–27. The crowds were expecting Jesus to do something about bringing the fullness of the Kingdom “because he was near Jerusalem and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.” (v.11), but instead Jesus told a parable which explains that although he is going to receive kingly power and authority, t...

Creedal Christians: Introduction

Posted by Luke J. Wilson on 29th September 2018 in Early Church | creeds,creedal Christians,creedal,early church,church history
...I’m starting a new four part series over the coming weeks which will be looking at the different historical creeds of the Church which have been recited, used and handed down for two millennia, beginning with the very first formal creed: the Apostles Creed. This series will be a mixture of historical background plus a commentary on the creed itself to see where each statement is based in Scripture, and why we can trust them to accurately portray the Faith. What are creeds and why should we accept them? The word “creed” comes from the Old English crēda, and from Latin crēdo meaning “I believe”. A creed is basically a set of beliefs which you profess...

...s and the new covenant. 6. Parallels to First Temple Period Artefacts The silver scroll’s craftsmanship aligns with ancient traditions seen in artefacts like the Ketef Hinnom scrolls and the Mount Ebal curse tablet. These earlier items featured sacred texts inscribed on silver and served spiritual or covenantal purposes. The Frankfurt amulet reflects how this enduring tradition found new expression within early Christianity, signifying the deep historical roots of using scripture as both a declaration of faith and a medium of divine presence. The Coming of Jesus: Coming on the clouds

...Coming on the clouds of heaven Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see ‘the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven’ with power and great glory. When people read Jesus saying that he will be "coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory" in Matthew 24:30, it often taken to mean that he will be doing that literally as opposed to figuratively. Kinda like this, but on clouds.   Careful now, before you put on your heretic hunting hats and grab your pitchforks — let me explain why I say that Jesus wasn't telling his fol...

Lent: Day 9 - Ignatius to the Philadelphians

...g of “a new covenant,” he has made the first one obsolete. And what is obsolete and growing old will soon disappear. This was written whilst the temple still stood and animal sacrifices were still being made, and so the old was still fading and disappearing (Heb 9:8-9). But now in Ignatius's time it has been about 30 years since the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, so the old really had disappeared and as far as he was concerned, the new covenant was in full effect which is why his letters often remind the churches not to fall back into the old ways of Judaism. That is something that I think many Christians today still need reminding of as well....
