Francis Chan turns towards a more historical and ancient view of Communion

Posted by Luke J. Wilson on 14th January 2020 in General Interest | eucharist,communion,francis chan,church fathers,church history,controversy
If you follow certain Christian blogs, or have Christian friends on Social Media, then you may have seen a short video clip being shared which has been taken from a recent sermon by popular Evangelical pastor/speaker and author, Francis Chan of Crazy Love ministries. Depending on who shared the clip will depend on which reaction you have seen; some are praising his words, others fearing for his future calling it a “red flag”. And all of this over a short statement he made about communion! I recommend you watch this 3 minute clip below before continuing, if you haven’t seen it already. I would also recommend watching the whole 47 minute sermon for some b...

Who is the New Jerusalem?

Posted by Luke J. Wilson on 6th January 2016 in Second Coming Series | Revelation,New Jerusalem,The Church,Holy City,Early Church,Early Church Fathers,Eusebius,Origen,Barnabas,millennium,millennial reign,1000 years,New Heaven and Earth
...r exactly 1000 years.   That is despite his kingdom having “no end”, as the angel Gabriel said to Mary in Luke 1:33 (cf. Dan 7:27). Why reign physically and temporarily, if only to end it and carry on reigning spiritually in heaven?   But if the Kingdom is within us (Lk 17:20-21) and has come upon us by the power of the Gospel (Lk 11:20), and if the body of believers are the New Jerusalem and also reign with Christ (2 Tim 2:12; Eph 2:6), does that leave room for any of this being a literal new planet Earth, or a literal and gigantic city floating out of the sky?   We can also see from records about Domitian's persecution (~96 AD) that he feared the...

The Mystery Of Epiphany And The Star Of Bethlehem

Posted by Luke J. Wilson on 6th January 2025 in Christmas | christmas, astronomy, astrology, epiphany
...As the Church celebrates Epiphany, we reflect on the Magi's visit to the Christ child, guided by a star—a sign of God’s revelation to the nations. This story, steeped in wonder and mystery, has sparked fascination for centuries. What was this “Star of Bethlehem” that led the wise men to Jesus? Was it a miraculous light, or could it have been a natural astronomical event designed by the Creator to herald the birth of the King of Kings? The chart is from the SkySafari app The Great Conjunction In December 2020, the world witnessed a rare astronomical event called a “great conjunction.” Jupiter and Saturn appeared so close in the night sky that t...

From Paradise to Presents: The Christian Story Behind the Christmas Tree

Posted by Luke J. Wilson on 23rd December 2024 in Christmas | history,St Boniface, christmas, christmas tree
...The Christmas tree is one of the most recognisable symbols of the festive season, adorning homes, churches, and public spaces with its evergreen beauty. But where did this tradition originate, and how did it become a central feature of Christmas celebrations? Looking into the history of the Christmas tree has turned out to be a fascinating historical story woven from various cultural and theological strands. The Paradise Tree and the Feast of Adam and Eve The connection between the Christmas tree and the Feast of Adam and Eve offers a large clue into its origins. In medieval Europe, December 24th was observed as the feast day of Adam and Eve, a commemoration t...

Is it the end of the world as we know it?

Posted by Luke J. Wilson on 27th September 2015 in Eschatology | blood moon,last days,end of the world,second coming,apocalypse,prophecy,false prophets,predictions
...September 28th 2015 will be a supermoon and a red moon at that. I last wrote about these four "blood moons" way back in April last year when certain self-styled prophets John Hagee and Mark Blitz's "End Times" teaching gained some popularity (and subsequent book promotions). One thing that I predicted in my previous article was that if nothing else comes from all of this "end is nigh" nonsense, is that these "prophets" would indeed profit from their books – as has been shown to be true in which the "Four Blood Moons" book has been in the top 20 on the New York Times Best-seller List, and has also recently been turned into a docu-drama! Other than th...

The Real St. Nicholas: A Man of Virtue, Not Violence

Posted by Luke J. Wilson on 7th December 2024 in Christmas | arianism,nicea council,nicene council,st nicholas,history,church fathers,church history
...en around 1000 years after the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. These accounts describe Nicholas, angered by Arius’s denial of Christ’s divinity, delivering a blow during the debate. However, contemporary records do not corroborate this tale. Even Nicholas’s attendance at the council is uncertain, as his name is absent from the earliest participant lists. The story likely arose as a dramatic embellishment to highlight his zeal for orthodoxy. Over time, it has been embraced as a symbol of righteous indignation. Roger Pearse, of the Tertullian Project, summarises this legend succinctly: To summarise again: there is no ancient evidence whatever that St Nichola...
